Registering Your Balcony Power Plant in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide for Germany

Registering a balcony power plant in 2026: The complete step-by-step guide

Since Solar Package 1 in May 2024, registering a balcony power plant in Germany has become significantly simpler. The previously required registration with the grid operator is no longer necessary for systems up to 800 watts – registration in the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) of the Federal Network Agency is sufficient.

Step 1: Create an account in the Market Master Data Register

Go to the website of the Market Master Data Register (www.marktstammdatenregister.de) and register as a private person. You will need a valid email address and your full address. Registration takes about 5 minutes.

Step 2: Register your system

In the logged-in area, select "Register unit" and then "Plug-in solar device". You enter the location, commissioning date, module power, inverter power, as well as manufacturer and model. Filling this out takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 3: Inform your landlord

Are you a tenant? Since a legal amendment in 2023, tenants in Germany have the right to install a balcony power plant – landlords may not generally prohibit it. Nevertheless, inform your landlord in writing.

Step 4: Check your household insurance

Many household insurance policies automatically cover balcony power plants. Check your insurance terms or briefly inform your insurer about the installation.
